UPND Youth Leaders Back Constitution Amendments, Urge Unity and Integrity in National Debate

Two senior youth leaders at UPND have thrown their weight behind the proposed constitutional amendments, calling them progressive, inclusive, and necessary for national development.

Speaking during a public briefing in Lusaka, UPND Lusaka provincial Youth Chairperson Anderson Banda emphasized the importance of the reforms and dismissed misinformation circulating about their intent.

“We, the UPND youths, fully support these proposals. They are not about increasing presidential terms or removing the running mate position as some opposition leaders have claimed. These amendments are about fairness, opportunity, and inclusivity—bringing youths, women, and marginalized groups to the decision-making table.”

Mr. Banda highlighted delimitation as one of the most crucial elements of the proposed changes, pointing out that it would enhance the allocation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources. With Zambia’s growing population, he argued, equitable resource distribution was more important than ever.

He further noted the government’s successes in implementing the free education policy, rolling out CDF-funded infrastructure projects, and creating job opportunities in key sectors such as health, education, and defense. Banda cited the employment of UPND councillors through government recruitment drives as proof of the administration’s commitment to empowerment.

Mr. Banda further called on the media to play an active role in disseminating accurate information about the amendments.

“Let the truth be known and let progress not be hindered by political propaganda,” he urged.

Echoing Banda’s sentiments, UPND District Youth Chairperson Grants Zimba praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his dedication to engaging with the youth, even attending a recent meeting in Kabwata Constituency despite a tight schedule.

Mr. Zimba also addressed the controversial issue of ministers remaining in office after the dissolution of Parliament, a matter previously challenged in court.

“We support the court’s decision, and we believe this principle must be enshrined in the Constitution. Ministers staying in office during campaign periods risk abuse of public resources and undermine democratic fairness. The future is ours to shape. Let us rise above politics and support what is right for Zambia,” Mr. Zimba said.
